You Can Build Your Own Floating Wood Shelves
July 31st, 2009 by Mike

I would ike to know why would anyone be interested in Do It Yourself shelves when they could just as easily take a ride to the neighboring hardware shop and obtain something ready made? Is making your own shelf really the best way to go?

Nearly everything I’ve built has been a unique design in one way or another. One of our girls wanted a shelf above her bunk bed which would fit her Barbie dolls in a specific way. The end result was in her precise preference of colors, the accurate dimension she wanted, and with the correct mix of cubes and open shelving. Getting that in a shop would most certainly been completely impossible. This is why you ought to build wood shelving using your 10 fingers.

It’s much cheaper to assemble your own shelving. In case I’m designing something ordinary, like a conventional bookcase, I work the project around the proportions of a standard wood plank and ensure that all pieces are cut down in such a way as to give me leftover wood for further projects. when compared to price of purchasing the same bookcase in the store, I invariably put away quite a bit of cash.

And I do not at all times need to get new wood. One of my current constructions is a storeroom unit which fits about and above the toilet in the girl’s bathing room. I’m making it from an aged wardrobe that a neighbor was kicking out. Together with the hardware, the entire thing will run me approximately $13. Beat that if you can. And for a second time, this isn’t a average task, it’s constructed to measure for specific proportions and I simply couldn’t go to a store and purchase something that would take advantage of the space.

As well as saving me cash and saving a tree or two, I get a wonderful feeling of satisfaction from building my personal shot glass shelf and storage constructions . I have a miniature woodworking space in a garden shed and I find it very relaxing to spend time being creative. It’s real quality time, and tmy youngest kid enjoys using actual tools instead of his toy set. The children also gain knowledge of safety and responsibility, it’s a winwin situation for everyone!
