Diabetes Lows

Blood sugar levels just above your target range may make you feel tired and thirsty. If your blood sugar level stays higher than normal for weeks, your body will adjust to that level, and you may not have as many symptoms of high blood sugar. Blood glucose is circulated to every part of our bodies. Our body’s cells and muscles use glucose for energy.

Glucagon is a hormone that causes body fat to be burned and cholesterol to be removed from deposits in the arteries. Glucagon secretion is reduced in most people who have Type 1 Diabetes within the first two to ten years after onset. Glucagon will rapidly bring the blood glucose level back to normal and help the person regain consciousness. A health care provider can prescribe a glucagon emergency kit. Low blood sugar is one of the Diabetes Lows that diabetics need to be aware of.

Hypoglycemia can increase the risk of serious – even deadly – accidents. Left untreated, hypoglycemia can lead to seizures and loss of consciousness. Hypoglycemia is the term used for when you have too little sugar in your blood. Low blood sugar comes on quickly and must be treated right away by your child, family, or friends. Patients need to understand why clinical guidelines exist, why they should care about reaching those goals, and how they can bring about change. It is also important to establish clinical and non-clinical goals for each patient, breaking them into steps that are obtainable in the short and long term. Patients often must monitor their own blood sugar, manage multiple medications, visit many providers, maintain foot hygiene, adhere to diet and meal plans, and engage in exercise. Patients also have to be able to identify when they are having problems with these functions, problem-solve to prevent crises, and advocate for themselves in what is often an overwhelming health care system. Patients with diabetes who experience low health literacy often struggle in their roles as health consumers.
