The holiday season is just around the corner, and you want to get your teenager a gift they want, then brush up on your car accessory knowledge with this tutorial. Once you know the jargon and you listen well, you should be able to work out what to slide under the Christmas tree this year.
These days, it’s wheels, wheels, wheels – what showcases the tires and car the best. Some like to select brightly hued, bulge acorn lug nuts or a cool center cap for rims of chrome, gun metal or customized color. Alternatively they can go for spinners and pretend that they are a rap star like 50 Cent. Lights under the carriage have been taking off. It will certainly get you noticed.
Some Terms You Should Know:
• Spinners are bolted onto your rims and spin on bearings, giving the wheels the visual impact of unexpected movement. The unexpected movement is because the spinners are autonomous of the rims so they can move even when the car is stopped, the law of momentum kicks in and they continue to spin due to the low resistance of the roller bearings.
• When you buy a car your rims have what are called factory center caps. To jazz up your ride, grab a set of trick wheel center caps and let your rims shine.
• The new center caps can be set in place when you upgrade your rims and tires. The caps cover the center of the rim and can have all manner of patterns – domestic or foreign logos, even a concept design. A tip for finding center caps for rims on the cheap is to check local salvage yards. Check out the Web; there’s a huge network of providers ready, willing and happy to help.
• Rims purchased from a manufacturer other than the car maker are called aftermarket rims and are used to personalize your car. These rims are commonly set up with center caps that come with the rims or are purchased seperately to really get a unique look.
• Hub caps are wheel covers that protect the lug nuts and rim by attaching to and covering the whole rim.
• LEDs are another option to add to rims. Powered by long-life batteries the diodes emit a glow around your rims.
• Wheel spacers give extra width to the wheels and tires, positioning them a little closer to the fenders. There is an improvement in handling as well as a more agressive look to your car.
